What is a vasectomy

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure for men that sterilize them. This type of operation means that a male is permanently unable to get their female partner pregnant. The two tubes known as the vas deferens is cut and the sperm will no longer be able to reach the semen.

This procedure is generally done as an outpatient procedure or in your physician's office. It usually only takes approximately a half an hour and you are done. You will not be put to sleep for this type of surgery but you will receive a local anesthetic to help to numb the scrotum area.

Once you are numb your physician will make a small incision on either side of your scrotum and will pull out a part of your vas deferens for that certain side. You might experience some pulling and tugging while this is being done. During that time a small piece of your vas deferens will be removed. The vas deferens ends will then be closed off with heat or by stitching them shut. Once that side is finished your physician will immediately do the same process on the opposite side.

After that is all finished the 2 small incisions on your scrotum will be stitched back together. Most physicians will use stitches that will dissolve so you will not have to worry about having them taken out.

A vasectomy is generally one of the safest and most effective forms of birth control that a male could ever choose.
