A Today Sponge is a birth control barrier method that can be found as an over the counter device. The today sponge is a reversible, small round device approximately a half of an inch thick and 1.57 inches within diameter. They are generally made from a soft polyurethan foam that is compared to the feeling of a natural vaginal tissue. 
 
The Today Sponge has a coating of nonoxynol-9 spermicide to help kill the sperm. With the nylon loop that it attached to the bottom it is very easy to remove the device once sexual intercourse is complete.

The sponge is a great way to prevent pregnancy, however it will not prevent you from any sexually transmitted diseases that your partner might have. So to decrease your risk of catching the infection be sure and use a condom. 
 
Women who have been known to have an allergic reaction to the nonoxynol-9 should not use the today sponge as a form of birth control. The sponge does not contain any form of hormones. It is simply a vagina barrier that contains a spermicide. There is only one size with the sponge so you will not have to worry about getting fitted.
