The small sponge like device helps to prevent a female from becoming pregnant. Today sponges will release nonoxynol-9 spermicide inside your body that will help protect you for up to 24 hours. This type of contraception does not contain any form of hormones. 
 
This unique device is not only made to protect the uterus from the semen, but it also will absorb it. Today Sponges contain the spermicide that will help to kill the sperm as well.
 
You will want to keep in mind that just because the today sponge will help to protect you from becoming pregnant it will not protect you from any sexually transmitted infections or HIV. So if you or your partner is infected with any type of these infections, you will want to be sure that you use a condom for extra protection.
 
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to spermicide nonoxynol-9 then the today sponges are not recommend for you to use. This is simply due to the fact that this chemical is the main ingredient that the today sponge contains to help protect you. Be sure that once a today sponge has been used that you do not reuse them. They will need to be discarded.
