What are spermicides?

What are spermicides?

Spermicides are a substance that is inserted deeply in the vaginal area before sexual intercourse that helps to kill the sperm and prevent pregnancy. This is one form of birth control that can be used alone. However, partners that are only using spermicides as a method of protection will increase their risk of becoming pregnant. Therefore, you might want to consider using a condom or some other form of protection so that you are not at risk.

Most spermicides substances are included within the contraceptives known as a barrier method. Some of the types of contraceptives that contain spermicides are cervical caps, condoms, diaphragms, and sponges. When these methods of contraception are combined it helps lower the risk of pregnancy.

The substance spermicides are generally clear, unscented, non-staining, unflavored, and lubricated. Spermicides also come in different forms such as foams, inserts, suppositories, film, creams, and gels.

Spermicides do not protect you or your partner from obtaining STDs.  So you will want to be sure that you use additional methods of protection.

Spermicides are available without having to have a prescription therefore you can purchase them over the counter. They also allow you to become fertile once you discontinue using them so do not worry if you intend on trying to become pregnant in the future.

Using the spermicide chemical can be used very simply and conveniently. It will need to be inserted every time that you have sexual intercourse, as it is not a contraceptive that will last for days.
