How Does The Mirena IUD Work?

How Does The Mirena IUD Work?

The Mirena IUD is a small device that is T-shaped and it is made from a plastic material. Within the inner walls of your uterus a very small amount of progestin is then delivered. This is approximately the same amount that you would generally receive if you were taking the pill. It only takes just a few minutes for your physician to insert the Mirena IUD and if you decide that you want to have it removed it is a very simple process. The progestin hormone that is in the IUD is released into your body and it helps to create a barrier to the sperm.

A Mirena IUD helps to keep the sperm from being able to reach the egg, that way the egg is not fertilized. It will also thin out the lining of the uterus as well as stopping your ovaries from releasing the eggs. With the combination of these three events it helps to prevent you from becoming pregnant with the Mirena IUD inserted, and the Mirena IUD can be used for up to 5 years.

Many researchers have stated that once the IUD has been inserted to help prevent conception, an inflammation process that will occur within 24 hours of the IUD being inserted is said to cause a reaction within the uterus that will then alert the white blood cells. Once the white blood cells have been involved, it acts as a defender and produces a toxic substance that will then attack the sperm.
