What Are Hormonal Based Options In Birth Control?

What Are Hormonal Based Options In Birth Control?

There are various types of birth control such as the patches and even the pill that is a hormone-based contraceptive that helps to reduce your risk of becoming pregnant. The hormones that are generally in birth control methods are progestin and estrogen.

These hormonal based birth controls help to control your ovaries from releasing an egg better known as ovulation. It also helps make the lining of the uterus thin making the eggs that are fertilized by the male's sperm unable to attach itself to your uterus and making it harder for the sperm to reach the eggs.

Be sure that if you have to take a certain medication or antibiotics that it will not affect your hormone-based birth control method used. If this was to happen with the decreased levels of hormones that is inside your body, it could prevent your hormonal based birth control from working and it could result in you becoming pregnant. You will want to make sure that you consult with your physician or a pharmacist before taking the medications.

You may want to use a barrier method if you are taking medications to aid as a back up to this choice in contraceptives. Certain types of barrier methods are not affected by medications like the hormonal birth control is.

Hormonal based birth control is only 99% effective and it also does not protect you from STDs. You will want to make sure that you use another method of contraception when you have sexual intercourse.
