What Is A Diaphragm?

What Is A Diaphragm?

A diaphragm is a type of contraceptive that is in the shape of a dome-shaped bowl that is made of a thin, flexible rubber that is placed so that the sperm cannot enter your uterus so it blocks the cervix. Giving an added protection the diaphragm also has spermicide in it.

The diaphragm should be inserted approximately 6 hours prior to having sexual intercourse. Then after you have sexual intercourse you should leave the device in for at least 6 hours but it should not be left in for over a 24 hour period.

You can simply remove the diaphragm by placing your finger into your vagina and just gentle pulling it out. Once the diaphragm has been removed you will want to make sure that it is washed and rinsed thoroughly. Then you will want to dry it and place it back in the storage case. You should never use any type of powders or oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, baby oil, or even mineral oil. The rubber can crack or become very brittle if these substances were to be placed on it.

Every 2 years you will want to be sure that you replace your diaphragm. Make sure that you every time you plan to use your diaphragm that you make sure it does not have any weak spots or holes. If so, you will not want to use it.

The diaphragm will not protect you against STDs so be sure that use a condom as well.
